Men’s Technical Underwear: the first layer that decides everything

Facing winter cold in the mountains requires a precise strategy, and it all starts with the first layer. Men’s technical underwear is designed to manage sweat, temperature, and comfort: a key element for the success of any alpine outing.

The role of the base layer

It’s not just a garment: it’s your second skin. Men’s technical underwear, or base layer, doesn’t aim to warm you up—it has a much more strategic role.

It regulates the body’s microclimate, keeping you dry, stable, and protected. It achieves this through three key functions:

  • Wicks Sweat Before It Turns Cold

During exertion, even on the coldest days, the body produces sweat. If it stays on the skin, it cools rapidly, causing a drastic heat loss. A good men’s technical base layer, like those made with AUDANT‑X® technology, works to transport moisture outward, where it can evaporate. The skin stays dry, the body remains stable, and the risk of chilling is reduced.

  • Retains Body Heat During Rest

During breaks, descents, or sudden weather changes, the body slows heat production. This is where an effective base layer makes the difference: it captures and retains natural warmth without creating excessive insulation.

The AUDANT‑X® fabric combination ensures an optimal balance: warmth when needed, freshness when it’s time to move again.

  • Follows Movement Without Pinching or Restricting

Men’s thermal underwear should never be a hindrance. It must fit the body without compression, following every move, twist, and bend. This requires bi-directional elasticity, flatlock anti-chafing seams, and soft materials that don’t irritate the skin.

Technology and Sustainability: The AUDANT-X® Fabric

The AUDANT-X® system combines two complementary materials in an innovative fabric designed for mountain technical clothing. Superfine merino wool is a high-quality natural fiber, soft and comfortable against the skin thanks to its low micron count, eliminating any itching sensation. Besides providing superior comfort, it offers excellent thermoregulation, keeping the body at the right temperature during both exertion and rest.

Supporting it is quick-dry polyester, a 100% sustainable (EcoMade) synthetic fiber made entirely from recycled resources such as textile waste and PET bottles. In addition to reinforcing the merino wool, it enhances breathability and accelerates the evaporation of sweat and body vapor, keeping skin dry and fresh even during intense phases.

This combination not only improves garment performance but also reduces environmental impact: it limits waste production, reduces the use of new resources, and helps combat microplastic pollution.

Field-tested performance

The AUDANT‑X® base layer is designed for those who experience the mountains authentically. Built to withstand extreme conditions, it has been tested on hikes, technical climbs, and high-intensity winter outings. Results include:

  • Stays dry on the skin, even after hours of uphill trekking;
  • Manages temperature variations without retaining odors, thanks to antibacterial merino wool;
  • Can be worn for several consecutive days, ideal for long treks or high-altitude bivouacs.

Comfort and Style for Every Context

Beyond performance, there’s visual and functional comfort. The Audant men’s technical underwear line also includes versatile items like technical leggings in AUDANT‑X® fabric, available in elegant and understated melange tones. Fit is precise, fluid, and enhanced by a minimalist design. Suitable for sports but perfect for everyday use, they strike a balance between performance, comfort, and essential style.

Care and Longevity

To maintain your men’s thermal underwear’s performance over time, follow simple washing rules:

  • Machine wash cold, preferably at 30°C, with similar colors and always inside out.
  • Avoid bleaching, ironing, dry cleaning, and tumble drying. Air dry flat without wringing.

This ensures the fabric retains elasticity, shape, and technical properties even after many uses.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Material choices in the AUDANT‑X® system follow ecological criteria. Merino wool reduces the need for frequent washing, extending garment life and minimizing environmental impact.
The polyester, made from recycled fibers, consumes fewer natural resources. The result is high-performance men’s technical underwear designed to last and respect the environment: less waste, more efficiency, maximum sustainability.
